The Permaculture Design Certificate course is an internationally-recognized, seventy-two-hour course resulting in a Permaculture Design Certificate. It provides an introduction to permaculture design as set forth by movement founder Bill Mollison.

This PDC is hosted by Geoff Lawton on an 8-acre PRI humid tropics demonstration site, on the edge of the Malaysian Titiwangsa mountain range, close to Kenaboi Forest Reserve, just 90km south of Kuala Lumpur.

The course covers sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates. It includes the application of permaculture principles to food production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation, and explores alternative economic structures and legal strategies supporting permaculture solutions.

SPECIFIC TOPICS INCLUDE:

● Theory and principles of permaculture

● Eco-friendly house placement and design

● Energy conservation techniques for all climates with specific focus on arid hot regions

● Recycling and sustainable waste management

● Organic food production

● Water harvesting and management

● Ecological pest control

● Drought-proofing landscapes

● Soil rehabilitation and soil erosion control

● Livestock

The foundation for this course is the Permaculture Designer’s Manual by Bill Mollison. Students are invited to bring details of their own sites or potential sites to consider during the course.

SPECIAL HUMID TROPICS MASTERCLASS COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course will inaugurate the inclusion of a masterclass on developing a site in the humid tropics where students will be equipped with knowledge to assess the potential of a tropical site, steps for planning and design as well as the strategy for implementation of the design.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS

GEOFF LAWTON

Geoff Lawton is the main facilitator for this PDC course. He is a Permaculture consultant, designer and teacher. He first took his Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course with Bill Mollison in 1983. He holds a Diploma in Permaculture Education, Design, Implementation, System Establishment, Administration and Community Development given by the founder of Permaculture, Bill Mollison.

Geoff has undertaken thousands of jobs teaching, consulting, designing, administrating and implementing, in 6 continents and close to 50 countries around the world. Clients have included private individuals, groups, communities, governments, aid organizations, non-government organisations and multinational companies.

He has currently educated over 15,000 students in Permaculture worldwide. These include graduates of the Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course and courses focused on the practical design of sustainable soil, water, plant, and legal and economic systems.

WAN MUHAMMAD RIDHWAN WAN MUHAMMAD HANIZAN

Wan Muhammad Ridhwan bin Wan Muhammad Hanizan was an intern at Zaytuna Farm under the tutelage of both Geoff and Nadia Lawton. He graduated as Chemical Engineer and spent 10 years in Oil and Gas production and operations with experiences in offshore engineering projects, financial budgeting, joint venture and people management before jumping full on into permaculture in 2014 after a PDC with PRI Co-Director, Rhamis Kent.

Whilst at Zaytuna Farm, he managed cattle, poultry, nursery, cropping and food forest systems setup, operations and maintenance. He also worked on irrigation, farm piping networks, mechanical works, earthworking and PDC co-teaching. He gained his International Project Management Certificate and valuable experience managing Zaytuna Farm and working together with Geoff Lawton on Consultancies, Designs and Implementation. He had the honour of learning from many others who are leading the way in their field, like Paul Taylor, Graham Bell and David Spicer.

Wan Muhammad Ridhwan

Ridhwan’s experience lies within the humid tropics and sub-tropic climate zones. Ridhwan is now working to establish Chalin Food Forest, where he lives with his family. He is also assisting in establishing a permaculture demonstration site in Vanuatu.

ABOUT THE LOCATION

The site is a classic example of a tropical farm and forest. Blessed with almost 12 hours of daylight and 2000mm of annual rainfall, you will be experiencing how Permaculture practices interacts with the potential growth of nature.

KENABOI, NEGRI SEMBILAN, MALAYSIA 01

The local population is made up of aboriginal tribes and local mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian villagers. The project site is a privately owned property intended for homesteading. It is currently still in the early stage of development and upon completion it will demonstrate energy-efficient appropriate housing with natural cooling systems, solar electricity, biological waste water treatment, dry compost toilets, rain water harvesting and diverse interactive plant, animal and tree systems for local food production and processing. The demonstration house will function as a classroom and administration office for the project. Once established, the project will serve as a model that can be replicated within the village, throughout Malaysia and other countries in the region.

Historically many PDC’s have, where viable, provided low/no cost scholarships to those from developing countries or communities. We support this endeavour by actively providing sponsorship positions at our Master Plan sites in developing countries. Course fees from PRI Australia off-set the cost/s of teaching those in desperate need.

Your fees include camping accommodation (in self-provided tents). Limited camping shelters (4 x 2.5m) are available but there is plenty of space for camping outside of these shelters. Full catering with three meals per day plus morning and afternoon tea, and an abundance of Permaculture examples throughout the permaculture demonstration farm.
PDC-Certificate
A Permaculture Design Certificate will be awarded upon successful completion.

FUTURE STUDIES AND OPPORTUNITIES

The PDC serves as foundation for further permaculture work and study and is a prerequisite for the Diploma in Permaculture Design, offered through The Permaculture Institute. Credit for this course is now accepted by a growing number of universities around the world. To date, thousands of permaculture designers worldwide have been certified through this course, and now comprise a global network of educators, ecological activists who influence major corporations, individuals creating new business alternatives and groups of committed people working together to change the way we view and design into our landscapes.
